Our Story
Freedom Angels Romania was born out of a desperate need to support lone animal rescuers in Romania. Working with our rescuers over the last six years has made us acutely aware of the horrific abuse and cruelty these dogs and cats suffer on a daily basis.
Our aim is simple; to provide support ‘from Shelter to Sofa’. Our work begins by removing the animals from immediate danger, then, through our network of volunteers, work to find them a loving home within the UK, taking care to ensure that not only is the home permanent, but that each and every animal is carefully matched depending on their individual needs.
We are working on establishing comprehensive local spaying and neutering programmes and are beginning to forge better relationships with local councils through meaningful dialogue. Our aim is to eradicate the abandonment of animals on the streets and in doing so, lessen the burden on the burgeoning shelters in Romania.
Being involved in such a venture can be incredibly rewarding, and there are so many opportunities for you to help save these lost souls. Of course we recognise that not everyone is in a position to adopt so please do check out the various ways you can help.

Why did we choose to help specifically Romanian dogs?
Katrina a trustee and founder member of our Charity helped a friend who brought over dogs from Romania. Katrina has made several trips to Romania to see the extent of the problems first hand, she started this Charity to do what she could to save these dogs and get a neutering program established in Romania funded by this charity.
How did a dog problem come about in Romania?
In the 1980s, in an effort to industrialise Romania the new Communist dictator Ceausescu forced thousands from the countryside in into city tenements. As people were forced out of the countryside, their traditional cottages were demolished. They were forced to leave their pets behind. Dogs and cats were abandoned in vast numbers.
Shelters and Dog Catchers
Dog catchers go out daily to round up unlucky strays. Many are terrified young puppies fending for themselves. These dogs are crammed into basic shelters, run by the cities, to die of disease, starvation and thirst.
KILL SHELTERS - Dogs killed by lethal injection
Dogs are often poisoned to death in the crammed public shelters. This is a slow and painful death. Many have a lethal injection. They die terrified, in discomfort and pain.
2013
In 2013 stray dogs were accused of attacking a small boy in Bucharest, the Romanian president pushed through a law allowing the killing of all dogs in public shelters after 14 days. The shelters are paid by the numbers killed.
So, why adopt a Romanian dog from us?
We work with loan rescuers in Romania who sacrifice a huge amount of their lives to save as many dogs as they can. We work with volunteer Vets on large spayathons to attempt to reduce future litters of dogs.
Our dogs have had the hardest of lives but due to our efforts and those of our Romanian rescuers, come to the UK in search of a better life. If you chose to give one of our dogs a home the reward will instant for all your family. These dogs have spirit, character, charm and most of all LOVE.
